Bird's Nest

So the other day I noticed some grass and twigs on my front porch. I didn't think anything of it. Then Kevin went out to water our flowers the other night and noticed that a bird was building a nest on my wreath on the front door. He said that he could tell the bird was mad that he was out there. The bird kept trying to get stuff and then would fly up on the roof and wait for Kevin to move. This bird built this nest in less than two days. I think that is totally amazing. The other night I was over and my friends, Breanne's house and she was showing us that a bird built a nest in her wreath. I told her that I thought it was neat and that she should keep it. Isn't that crazy that this happened to both of us in the same neighborhood. And this happened to that Nicea on Good Things Utah, I heard her talking about it one day and she took it down and it rebuilt its nest again, so she finally had to take her wreath down. Well now that it is on my front door I don't really know how I feel about it. Mostly because there is now going to be bird poop all over my porch and Kevin thinks that it is going to fly in our house when we open the door. But I also think it is kind of neat. Eric says that it means good luck, because when you get one in your Christmas tree, that is what it means. So, I can't decide what to do. Should I take it down, with the chance that the bird will build again, or leave it up and let the bird lay its eggs there. My mom says they are only in there maybe a couple of weeks, so it really wouldn't be that bad. So what do you think...should it stay or should it go?

We had one build on our speakers outside on the deck & they actually didn't make a mess at all. I left it alone & it was just fine :) I would feel guilty/sad to move their house & I don't even love animals! Poop is easy to clean up right? ;) ....Melissa

I think you should have Kevin talk to the bird and ask what it thinks. If I remember correctly he has some pretty mad skills. Then when they have made their decision, that's the one you should stick to. Oh, this is Walter, I stole Traci's login.

Miss Alli!

I think you should leave it. Not only is that way cool, but think how fun it will be to show Taylor the little eggs and wait for the birds to hatch!
I am a total animal lover though:)

Also, 2 days to a bird is probably 2 years for us. Imagine making a house out of sticks! Ugh!!!

Hey Ali!
It's Chantal. Bob and I had the same thing happen to us. I thought it was cool so I kept our wreath up. It was a mess, after it laid eggs and had babies there was poop all over. I had to throw away my wreath and also some of the paint came off my door because I left my magnet (the the wreath hung on) on for so long that it took off the paint. Plus the chirps of the new birds were cute for a day and then annoying thereafter. Just thought I'd share. Also congrats on your newbie!

Ali, first off your whole post made me think of those good ol times we used to write emails back and forth. Still the same wonderful Ali I loved getting emails from! Second, I would say keep the nest, that's so fun, but your friend a couple posts up had a few problems, so...you're gonna have to weigh the options. Love ya :)

I think my bird abandoned it's nest, b/c I haven't seen her for a while. She may have gotten mad b/c I kept opening the door while she was making her nest. Anyway, from previous experience, the bird will fly in your house & will make a little bit of a mess, but it is fun to show your kids the eggs & then the baby birdies once they hatch. I'm torn too!!

Ali, we had one on our front door. I have fought with birds for years buiding nests in my flower pots on my deck. I would take the nest and go put it in the tree where it belongs and they would build a new one. This year I didn't get the flower pots and they are flying around the deck constantly looking for their spot. It is fun to watch the little babies. Just don't touch the babies or the mom will abandon them. That is sad.
The one on the front door had thier baby and moved on quickly. I did have to get rid of the wreath last week. (Suzie)

Let them stay it is a good omen to have a birds nest and they really are only there a few weeks my friend in AZ had doves of all birds build a nest on their bike bag and they laid eggs and within like 3 weeks the eggs hatched and like 2 weeks later the birds were all gone...so I say keep the good omen around and consider yourself lucky :) How is that little Haley doing she is sooo adorable! And how is Taylor dealing now?

Hi Alli:

Pros:

-Lovely birds/sounds

Cons:

-Messy birds
-Noisy birds
-Bird droppings stain
-Bird droppings eat away at paint, stucco, metal, cement, etc....
-Depending on type of wreath, birds eat away at any decorative attachments
-Bows attached will be pooped on, squashed, and basically destroyed

Please don't misunderstand me; I love birds, all birds, and wildlife, however, there was a reason I put my front door wreath up in the first place and housing birds so I could twice-daily hose down dropping, mullet, twigs, feathers, human hair, etc., were not on that list!

Just this morning I hosed down a huge pile of mess. I plan to trade out my wreath for another type. In the meantime, I've tried everything…short of pesticides. I won't go that far, but not even hairspray a friend told me to use, worked!

Good-luck! I say get rid of the wreath. The birds will be a sure thorn in your side after a few months and they'll continue to come back every year!

A persistent little bird nested in my front door wreath. I had it moved to a more stable site until her eggs can hatch. I'm also making myself a mental note to not to hang a spring or summer wreath anymore, since I'm actually terrified of birds. (Sidenote: A bat took up residence on the front porch of a former home of mine. What is it about me that attracts flying things???)
